Description

Software instruments argue about one question: should a sound be synthesised or recorded? Fraction, built by Eraform Audio with Prototype Audio and now at version 1.1.2, answers by recording. It is a multisample instrument assembled from recordings of real analog hardware, on the reasoning that a producer chasing a specific hardware character is better served by the actual article than by an approximation of it — no oscillator programming required to get there. That honesty extends to the trade-off, which is disk space on a grand scale. At $49.99, half the $99 regular price, the tone-per-dollar maths is excellent, provided your drive can take the relationship.

The Engine And The Content

Because Fraction is sample-driven, its character is decided by the source recordings, and the instrument layer on top handles playback and shaping — turning a library of multisampled hardware into something playable and musically responsive. Content arrives through an expansion system rather than one monolithic block. The factory expansion content is included with purchase and contains the full set of sounds and presets; additional expansions such as Monuments and Core-Synth install into the same Expansions folder, and the instrument’s growing library builds from there. Eraform positions the content around bass-weighted and textural material, and community reaction has clustered around the low-end content in particular — treat that as a signal about where the library’s strengths lie. Patch files themselves are small; the recordings beneath them are the substance, which is standard architecture for serious sampled instruments.

The Disk Conversation, In Numbers

Plan the install like you mean it. The factory content downloads as a compressed archive of roughly 25 GB, and extraction is the peak-space operation: the developer’s published free-space figures vary between about 51 GB and 60 GB depending on which page you read, so provision the higher number and avoid a failed extraction halfway through. Once installed and verified, the original archive can be deleted to reclaim space. One operational warning causes more support traffic than everything else about this instrument combined: expansions must sit directly inside the Expansions folder with no extra subfolder level, because unzipping utilities love creating one, and an expansion nested a level too deep exists on disk but stays invisible to the instrument browser. Moving or renaming the expansion folder will likewise break preset loading.

Compatibility is specific. Formats are 64-bit VST3 and AU only — there is no AAX build, so Pro Tools has no supported route in, and that is a genuine exclusion rather than a detail to work around. Hosts named by the developer include FL Studio 12 or later, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Studio One 5, Reaper and GarageBand. macOS 10.9 or later and Windows 10 or later are the recommended floors, and one licence activates on up to three of your own devices. The developer does not publish an explicit Apple Silicon statement, so M-series Mac owners should confirm current compatibility with support directly rather than assume it — this listing will not claim support that has not been stated.

Installation, Step By Step

The sequence rewards patience at exactly one point. Download the archive and the correct operating-system installer, then extract the archive somewhere with the full free-space allowance available — extraction, not the final install, is the peak demand. Run the installer; on Windows the VST3 component lands in the standard Common Files VST3 location, and on macOS the component installs to the usual Components folder. Place the expansion content directly inside the Expansions folder with no extra nesting, confirm your DAW scans the standard plugin directories, rescan, and activate the licence, which permits up to three of your own devices. If the instrument fails to appear after a rescan, the cause is almost always directory placement rather than the licence, so check the folder structure before anything else.

The Deal

Half price at $49.99, full factory content included. Modelled instruments sell you infinite tweakability; Fraction sells you recordings of the real machines, per note and per velocity, at a price that undercuts most single synth plugins. If your deadline productions keep needing analog weight that programming never quite delivers, recordings beat rendering — and at this price the only real cost is the disk space you were saving for something less fun.
