Description
Four instruments defined the sound of electric piano across soul, funk, jazz fusion and pop: the Fender Rhodes, the Wurlitzer, the Hohner Clavinet and the Hohner Pianet. iZotope Velvet recreates all four in a single plugin, blending detailed multisampling with physical modelling so the instruments respond like the electromechanical originals — tines, dampers, mechanical noise and all — for $24.99. If vintage keys appear anywhere in your productions, this is the one-plugin answer.
Modelled, Not Just Sampled
The hybrid approach is what makes Velvet behave like an instrument rather than a recording of one. Multisamples capture the tonal detail; physical modelling reproduces tine behaviour, damper noise and mechanical character, so the sound changes with your touch the way the hardware does. Adjustable tine age, wear and voicing let you dial each instrument’s condition — a pristine studio Rhodes and a road-worn one are different instruments, and Velvet lets you choose which one shows up to the session. Velocity response runs from soft, intimate touches to percussive accents, and optional mechanical noise — key release, damper thump, case resonance — supplies the realism cues that tell a listener’s ear a real instrument is in the room.
Period-Correct Everything
The integrated effects chain is voiced to each instrument’s era: tremolo, chorus, vibrato, phaser, wah and spring reverb of the kind these pianos were actually played through, plus classic amplifier and cabinet models appropriate to each instrument for authentic live and studio tone. The preset library covers classic studio sounds, live setups and modern processed tones, so most sessions start from a finished sound and adjust rather than building from raw. For the Clavinet especially, the percussive funk vocabulary is all here — the instrument that defined a genre’s keyboard texture, with its bite intact.
Who Plays Velvet
Soul and R&B producers who need Rhodes and Wurlitzer that survive being the lead voice in a track. Jazz musicians recording or performing with realistic electric piano response. Film and TV composers scoring anything set between the 1960s and the 1980s, where the wrong piano dates the scene instantly. Funk producers chasing authentic Clavinet. Anyone who has rented, borrowed or priced the hardware and done the maths. Velvet runs as VST3, AU and AAX on macOS 10.13+ and Windows 10+, in every major DAW.
The four instruments are worth separating mentally, because each covers different sessions. The Rhodes is the all-rounder — ballads, neo-soul, pop, anything needing warmth with bell-like attack. The Wurlitzer brings the reedier, more aggressive bark that cuts through guitars. The Clavinet is a rhythm instrument as much as a keyboard, all percussive funk attack. The Pianet is the connoisseur’s pick, drier and more intimate. Velvet’s per-instrument voicing controls — tine age, wear and character — mean each of those can be presented as a cherished studio piece or a gig-worn original, and the amp and effects pairings are era-matched, so a Rhodes through the wrong decade’s rig is a choice you make, not a limitation you accept. Four distinct session personalities, one plugin window.
The Deal
Four of the most recorded keyboard instruments in history, modelled with this level of mechanical detail, for $24.99. Vintage electric pianos are a category where single-instrument plugins routinely cost three or four times this — and Velvet covers the whole category, hardware quirks included. It is the cheapest seat in the vintage keys world that does not feel like a compromise. Instant delivery; the Rhodes is in your next session.
Delivery is instant, and the first chord tells the story — that soft tine attack blooming into sustain is a sound producers have chased through rented keyboards and expensive single-instrument plugins for decades, here in one window.
