Description

Noire began with a specific piano and a specific room. The piano is a handpicked, custom-intonated Yamaha CFX 9-foot concert grand associated with composer and pianist Nils Frahm; the room is Saal 3 at Funkhaus Berlin, where Native Instruments and Galaxy Instruments captured the instrument over several weeks through vintage microphones and preamps. The result is a grand with a personality, not a showroom average.

Two Instruments: Pure and Felt

Noire ships as two separate Kontakt instruments drawn from the same piano. Noire Pure presents the CFX without preparation — clear, detailed, with the depth, sustain and expressive dynamic range of the sampled concert grand intact, the instrument for detailed solo performance. Noire Felt places a felt moderator between the hammers and the strings, softening the attack into the intimate, close piano of modern scoring: the sound of a grand recorded in a whisper, suited to delicate and atmospheric composition. Between the two, one library covers the recital and the 2 a.m. cue.

Shape the Piano Itself

The customisation goes well past preset browsing. Attack, release, resonance, overtones, velocity response, temperament and piano noises are all adjustable, alongside EQ, compression, reverb and delay. That means the same sampled CFX can be tuned toward natural performance for a modern classical piece, pulled closer and drier for a singer-songwriter production, or pushed into lo-fi and atmospheric territory for electronic work — the character is a set of decisions, not a fixed recording. One hundred included snapshots provide starting points across those directions, ready to perform as they are or to dismantle.

The Particles Engine

Noire’s most creative feature generates clouds of pulsating, harmonic elements based on the notes you play. Played straight, the library is an expressive concert instrument; engage the Particles Engine and single notes bloom into moving, evolving textures, so one library covers the cue’s piano part and its atmosphere at the same time. Ambient music, film scoring, sound design, experimental composition and textural production are where it earns its keep — the piano stops being only an instrument and becomes an environment.

Working Specs and Fit

Noire is a 16 GB library that runs in the free Kontakt Player or Kontakt, with the current Native Instruments page listing Kontakt 7.6 or later, and it is designed to integrate with Komplete Kontrol keyboards. The applications list reads like modern piano work itself: film and TV scoring, modern classical, ambient, pop ballads, singer-songwriter production, electronic music and lo-fi. If your writing starts at a piano, this is the piano with the widest second life.

Where Noire Fits in a Working Week

Run through a typical production week and the library keeps appearing. Monday’s modern classical piece lives in Noire Pure, played straight with the resonance shaped to the room the piece imagines. Wednesday’s singer-songwriter session switches to Noire Felt for the close, dampened tone that sits under a vocal without competing with it. Friday’s trailer cue starts as a handful of Pure notes and lets the Particles Engine grow the atmosphere around them. The Komplete Kontrol integration keeps that workflow on the keyboard hardware rather than the mouse. Few piano libraries cover performance, intimacy and sound design in one purchase; fewer still do it from a single, genuinely distinctive instrument.

The Deal

Premium piano libraries hold their price because character like this is hard to record. Noire at $29.99 instead of $149 is an 80% cut — a flagship character piano, two instruments deep, at a fifth of its list price. However you use it — concert grand, felt confidant or texture engine — this is the piano upgrade in this batch, at the price of a utility.
