reFX Rippler – Physical Modelling Synth With No Samples, 60% Off

SKU: REFXRIPPLER-2026

A synth that generates its sound from physics instead of files: Rippler couples dual-layer modal synthesis — banks of resonators with bi-directional energy coupling across 12 acoustic models — with classic subtractive oscillators and filters. Acoustic, metallic, organic or plainly alien, at $39.99 down from $99.99.

Description

Sample playback freezes a sound at the moment it was recorded. Rippler takes the opposite route: its dual-layer engine models resonating structures themselves, so tones respond to performance and modulation the way physical objects do — with a life in them that static waveforms cannot fake. This is physical modelling treated as a full modern synth, not a science demo.

Modal Synthesis: 12 Acoustic Models and a Blank Canvas

The sound generation centres on banks of resonators with bi-directional energy coupling — the resonators exchange energy in both directions, which is what makes the resulting tones evolve instead of simply decaying. Twelve acoustic models supply the starting structures: String, Beam, Squared, Bell, Membrane, Plate, Drumhead, Djembe, Vibraphone, Marimba, Open Tube and Closed Tube. When the factory structures run out, Manual mode lets you paint your own additive resonators, and snapshot morphing moves between configurations in real time. The palette that results runs acoustic, electronic, percussive and experimental without loading a single sample.

The Exciter and the Subtractive Side

Resonators need something to excite them, and Rippler’s exciter section supplies 32 samples, custom impulses, sample import and live sidechain input — external audio can be routed into the resonators and transformed, turning percussion into pitched textures or field recordings into musical material. Alongside the modelling, each layer carries two oscillators with Phase, Fold and Asymmetry controls and two filters drawn from 27 types including vintage, ladder and vowel designs, with parallel and serial resonator routing between the layers. One layer can supply the attack while the other holds the resonant tail.

Modulation With Shaped Responses

Four LFOs with 64 shapes, four envelopes, random generators, MIDI and MPE sources and macros feed a drag-and-drop modulation system, and Mod Mapping lets you shape the response curve of every connection — exponential, S-shaped, stepped and more. A slow LFO therefore does not have to produce an obvious sweep; it can creep, lurch or step in ways that keep long sounds alive. MPE and aftertouch support put that movement under the fingers on compatible controllers, and Scala and MTS micro-tuning support takes the instrument beyond twelve-tone equal temperament entirely.

Effects, Presets and a 51 MB Footprint

Thirteen effects across three chains — including the five-mode RutaVerb and the lighter MiniVerb — can be rearranged so the processing order itself becomes part of the sound design. The factory content runs to 441 presets plus a full arpeggiator and sequencer, and the whole instrument installs at roughly 51.3 MB as VST3, AU and AAX on macOS 10.13 or later and Windows 10 or 11, with 8 GB of RAM as the listed minimum. For a synth with this much machinery inside, that is a remarkably small footprint.

Hosts, Installation and Getting Started

Compatibility is broad: reFX lists FL Studio, Logic Pro X and GarageBand, Ableton Live, Cubase and Nuendo, Reason 10 or later, Pro Tools 11 or later, Bitwig Studio, Studio One, SONAR, Reaper, Digital Performer, Renoise, ACID Pro, Orion, NI Maschine and Tracktion Waveform among supported hosts. Installation runs through the reFX Cloud application — install the app, sign in, locate Rippler among your products, install, then rescan in your DAW if it does not appear immediately, completing online activation if requested. Sixteen GB of RAM is recommended over the 8 GB minimum for larger sessions. The path from purchase to first resonator is short, which matters for an instrument whose appeal is experimentation.

The Deal

Physical modelling specialists rarely discount this far: $39.99 against $99.99 is 60% off a genuinely different synthesis method. If your synth folder is all wavetables and virtual analog — excellent tools that all start from the same place — Rippler is the missing physics at a sale price, and the first session with the Bell and Membrane models will explain why it could not have been a sample library.
