Description

Traditional synths treat your fingers as switches: key down, note on, everything else handled by wheels and afterthoughts. Equator2 was built around the opposite assumption — that a note should keep responding for as long as you hold it. Designed for MPE control, it maps the five gestures of expressive playing — strike, glide, slide, press and lift — directly into the sound, per note. Bend pitch with one finger, swell the filter with another, add vibrato by rocking a third. At $49.99 against a $219 list price, a 77% saving, it is also simply a deep hybrid synth that undercuts instruments with a fraction of its range.

Six Source Modules, Four Kinds of Synthesis

Each of Equator2’s six source modules can operate as a wavetable oscillator, a virtual-analog oscillator, a sampler or a granular engine, and noise sources are available too — and the modules combine freely within a single patch. That architecture means one preset can stack a sampled attack on a wavetable body with a granular tail, while the next preset is a pure analog-style bass. The practical consequence is range: glassy cinematic pads, evolving textures that never quite repeat, leads that sing, basses with genuine movement while the note sustains. Instruments usually specialise; Equator2 generalises at a very high level, which is why it keeps ending up as the only synth open in a session.

MPE: Every Note Is a Performance

The expressive layer is what the synth was designed around. With an MPE controller, each note carries its own continuous control data, so a chord is no longer one gesture but five or ten independent ones — one note can swell while its neighbour stays dark, a melody can bend into its target while the harmony holds still. This is the difference between playing a synthesizer and playing an instrument, and it changes the parts you write: lines become phrased instead of triggered. Equator2 is not locked to ROLI hardware — the engine rewards any MPE controller, and it remains a fully capable hybrid synth with a standard keyboard, where the depth of the sound engine and modulation system carry the value on their own.

Modulation and the 12-Slot Effects Environment

A modulation system built for movement connects the performance gestures to the synthesis engine, translating finger pressure and motion into evolving timbre rather than static settings. Downstream, a 12-slot effects environment finishes patches inside the instrument, so the sound you design is the sound you mix — no rebuilding the character with external plugins every time the preset loads. For sound designers, that self-containment matters: a patch is a complete, portable piece of work. For producers, it means presets arrive mix-ready, with the movement and spatial treatment already part of the design.

Where It Earns Its Place

The heading list from its own documentation reads like a festival bill: electronic music, ambient, cinematic work, experimental production, pop and contemporary sessions, and dedicated sound design. That breadth follows directly from the architecture — granular and sampling cover the textural world, wavetable and virtual-analog cover the synth world, and MPE covers the performance world. Film and game composers get evolving material that responds to a hand instead of a mod wheel; electronic producers get basses and leads with sustain-stage life; everyone gets a synth that stays interesting in month six.

The Deal Board Verdict

At its $219 list price, Equator2 competes with flagship instruments and justifies it. At $49.99 it costs less than many preset expansion packs while delivering the full instrument — six hybrid source modules, a deep modulation system, twelve effects slots and the most complete MPE implementation in its class. If you own an expressive controller, this is close to a compulsory purchase at the price. If you do not, it is still a 77%-off flagship hybrid synth, and it may be the instrument that finally talks you into the controller. Either way, the board does not list a better synth bargain in this batch.
