Description

Twenty dollars is the smallest ticket on this board, and it might buy the most permanent resident of your mastering chain. StandardCLIP, built by Christian Knufinke at SIR Audio Tools and refined across a decade to version 1.6, is the clipper mastering engineers mention when you ask what actually sits on their output. Its party trick is honesty: the oversampling architecture that most developers bury behind a single quality switch is laid out as controls you can set yourself. Down from $25 to $20, it is also the easiest yes in this entire batch.

The Hidden Machinery, Surfaced

The reasoning matters, so here it is plainly. Clipping truncates whatever crosses the ceiling, and that truncation generates harmonics; whether the result reads as distortion or as loudness depends on how the truncation is filtered. StandardCLIP lets you choose the oversampling factor, all the way up to 256x — far beyond the 4x or 16x ceilings common elsewhere — and to configure the filters that oversampling requires. Run them linear-phase or minimum-phase. Adjust their quality and their cutoff frequency. Those choices carry a real trade-off, since linear-phase filters bring pre-ringing while minimum-phase filters bring phase shift, and neither answer is universally right. In this plugin the trade-off becomes your decision, matched to the material, instead of an inherited factory default you cannot see.

The clipping itself is continuously variable from a hard brick wall through to smooth soft saturation, with a 2:1 ratio mode for gentler, more compressor-like behaviour. That range is what lets one tool cover the two jobs its developer intends: a dynamics stage in the master chain raising perceived volume by trimming peaks, or a deliberate harmonic generator where the odd harmonics are the desired colour.

Assistance And Evidence

Two features separate thoughtful engineering from a bigger knob count. The Output Gain Assistant addresses a real and rarely discussed problem: because oversampling reconstructs the waveform at a higher rate, peaks can reappear above the ceiling after down-sampling. The assistant listens while you play the loudest section of your project and sets the output fader to the highest value that guarantees nothing exceeds the ceiling — aliasing prevention by measurement, not by headroom and hope. Then the metering shows the work: the output waveform display overlays the pre-reduction level in red against the output level so clipping depth is visible frame by frame, a half-waveform view expands the scale for fine adjustment, and input and output RMS metering, maximum peak and RMS readouts complete the evidence.

Platform coverage is unusually generous for a specialist tool: VST, VST3, Audio Unit and AAX formats, 64-bit Intel and native Apple Silicon, plus a 32-bit Windows build for older sessions, with Pro Tools 11 or newer supported. Latency compensation stays correct when the plugin is bypassed, including in Cubase. Authorisation is a licence key with no dongle, a fully functional demo is available to evaluate on real sessions, and the developer’s manual documents the signal diagram and oversampling configuration in proper detail.

Two Jobs, Both Legitimate

It is worth separating the two intended uses, because they justify the purchase independently. As a mastering dynamics tool, the workflow is conservative: play the loudest passage, let the Output Gain Assistant find the highest safe output, choose an oversampling configuration that flatters the material, and trim only the peaks that buy loudness without audible cost. As a harmonic generator, the same plugin is pushed deliberately — soft-clip shapes and the 2:1 mode add odd-harmonic colour to drums, buses or full mixes where a little aggression is the point. The waveform overlay makes both jobs visible rather than guessed, and the developer’s documentation, including a dedicated compatibility note for Logic Pro automation, treats the tool with the seriousness its user base does.

The Deal

$20 instead of $25 is a modest percentage and an irrelevant one — the point is that a reference-grade clipper with 256x oversampling and an output assistant costs less than a pizza. If you master, mix loudly, or chase competitive levels, this is the board’s smallest purchase with the longest working life. Buy it once; use it on everything.
