Description

Loudness plugins usually hand you a threshold, a release and a prayer. P22 RAIL reorganises the entire job. Built by Pulsar Modular, it is a time-domain A/D clipper with a fixed 0 dBFS rail and — the important part — a stabilising engine, based on the design approach of the company’s P21 Atlas, that prepares peaks before they reach the clipping stage. The rail then shapes what remains while the leading edge of your transients survives. The working method shrinks to three decisions: choose a flavour, set DRIVE, listen. On the board it is $49.99 against a $179 list price, the deepest percentage cut in this batch after the bundles: 72% off.

Three Flavours, One Rail

The character choice is explicit rather than accidental. MODERN is the cleanest, most transparent response, for loudness and peak control without deliberate colour. SHARP adds a defined edge — more presence, more transient focus — which suits rhythmic and produced material that wants snap and forward energy. VINTAGE runs warmer and richer, with asymmetric behaviour that produces harmonic richness and tolerates more drive while keeping its identity. Because the stabiliser prepares the programme ahead of the rail, switching flavours changes tone rather than wrecking the gain staging underneath, so the three options are genuinely auditionable against each other at working level.

Controls Built For Judgement

DRIVE is the main performance control, running from 0 to 18 dB and determining how deeply the programme is pushed into the clipper; at zero, RAIL adds no drive of its own. The recommended working method is to raise DRIVE gradually until CLIP DEPTH reads roughly 2–3 dB on loud peaks, then choose the flavour that serves the material. TRIM provides output-level control from unity down to −30 dB for setting the final level after the character is chosen. MATCH and BYPASS are the honesty controls: MATCH compares the processed signal at a matched level so you judge the clipping’s actual sonic effect instead of simply preferring whichever version is louder, which is the oldest trap in mastering. Latency is just 3 samples — fast enough that the manufacturer rates it for live front-of-house use, let alone studio mixing, mastering and bus work.

Editions And Placement

The Stereo edition carries the complete engine and all three flavours for mono and stereo buses, covering conventional mixing and mastering workflows. The Immersive edition extends the same engine to multichannel formats from mono through LCR, quad, 5.1, 7.1 and up to 9.1.6, treating the main channels as one coherent programme so the spatial image stays controlled as the signal is driven into the rail; the LFE channel is monitored but deliberately not clipped and remains time-aligned with the mains. In practice RAIL earns its place at the end of a mix or mastering chain when loudness and peak shaping are the goal, and equally on individual buses and groups where the flavour choice — transparency, edge, or warmth — can be made per stem. Formats cover VST3, AU and AAX.

Flavour Strategy, Bus By Bus

The three flavours invite a per-bus strategy rather than a single global choice. On the master, MODERN earns its keep when the record is already coloured and the job is purely level. On a drum bus, SHARP’s transient focus and presence can replace a layer of parallel processing by keeping hits forward as DRIVE rises. On a vocal or acoustic bus, VINTAGE’s warmer asymmetry adds body while it controls peaks, so the clipper contributes tone the arrangement actually wants. The CLIP DEPTH readout keeps the experiment disciplined — work toward that 2–3 dB region on loud peaks, compare flavours at matched level with MATCH engaged, and use BYPASS to confirm the loudness you gained did not cost the punch you started with. That loop, reference to decision, takes under a minute per bus.

The Deal

At $49.99 instead of $179, you are paying utility money for a mastering-grade loudness decision with a character menu attached. The stabiliser keeps your transients alive, the flavours keep the choice musical, and MATCH keeps you honest. For engineers chasing competitive levels without flattening the record, this is the board’s loudness bargain of the batch.
