Description

Dezert Audio spent years doing something unusual: building sampled instruments from a collection of rare hardware, which means spending years listening closely to what makes hardware sound like hardware. FREQ-FX is where that listening turns into an effects plugin — an analog-modelled creative multi-effect of eight modules, designed to take material that is technically correct and emotionally flat and give it texture, movement, width, depth and drive. It is the developer’s first effects plugin, and it is on the board at $49.99, cut from $129. Nothing in it exists to fix a problem; everything in it exists to make a sound less clean than it arrived.

Character, Modelled As Behaviour

The design target is the behaviour of classic effect pedals and hardware units rather than their frequency plots: distortion that thickens instead of fizzing, saturation with some give in it, modulation that drifts rather than oscillating with mechanical regularity. The eight modules divide the character work the way the developer frames it. Texture supplies the grit and surface that separates a recording from a render. Movement stops a static sound sitting still in the arrangement. Width manages stereo behaviour so a mono source stops competing for the centre. Depth handles front-to-back placement, the dimension most home mixes lack entirely. Distortion generates harmonics from subtle thickening to outright destruction. Alongside the modules sits an EXCITER blend control, adding movement and high-end sparkle as a blend rather than a switch — a thoughtful touch, since exciters are among the easiest processors in the world to overuse.

Randomize Is The Workflow

The Randomize button is more central here than novelty features usually are, and it reflects something true about creative processing. When you insert an EQ, you know the answer you want. When you insert a character multi-effect, you usually know only that the sound is boring and you are hunting for a direction. Methodically auditioning parameter combinations is slow, and worse, it is biased toward the settings you always reach for. Randomization breaks the habit loop: generate a patch, listen, generate again, and when something catches your attention, refine manually from there instead of starting from a neutral state that leads where it always leads. In a device whose only test is whether you like the result, that loop is the fastest route to sounds you would not have designed on purpose.

Read The Requirements Honestly

Dezert publishes separate platform tables, and two consequences deserve plain statement. On macOS — Big Sur 11.0 and later, Intel Core i5 or Apple Silicon M1 and better, 8 GB of RAM — the plugin ships as AU and VST3. On Windows 10 64-bit with a Core i5 or better and 8 GB of RAM, it is VST3 only. There is no AAX build on either platform, so Pro Tools is not supported. The developer also lists DAWs it has tested rather than claiming universal support — Logic Pro, FL Studio and Ableton Live on Mac, FL Studio and Ableton Live on Windows — while other VST3 hosts would be expected to work without being on that tested list. Authentication requires an internet connection, which matters if your studio machine lives offline.

Where It Sits In A Chain

Think of FREQ-FX as the last creative stage before a sound meets the mix. Loops that arrive technically finished and sonically anonymous are the prime target: a pass of texture and drift turns library material into something that sounds owned. Polite synth patches take movement and width so they stop competing for the centre; clean guitars take saturation with give in it; plain keys take depth. Because the device is random-access by design, it also functions as an idea generator when a production stalls — a legitimate role that corrective tools cannot fill.

The Deal

$49.99 against $129 is 61% off a first effects plugin from a team whose entire reputation rests on hearing hardware properly. For tracks that sound right and feel wrong — the polite synth, the flat guitar, the loop that will not sit up — this is a character transplant at utility money. The board’s summary: flat tracks are the target, and this is the payload.
