Description

Weak drums rarely need one fix. They need attack, harmonics, low-end weight, top-end presence and loudness — which usually means five separate plugins bought separately and stacked in the right order. KNOCK packages that entire chain into one streamlined interface. Created by producer and sound designer DECAP around the workflow behind his Drums That Knock series, it runs the five stages in sequence, every time, so the decision surface is one window instead of an insert-slot pile-up.

Punch and Saturate: Attack and Density

Punch is a transient shaper that emphasises the attack portion of a drum. Kicks cut through the mix instead of sitting in it, snares snap, loops gain impact and dull one-shots turn aggressive. Saturate follows with harmonic distortion that is compensated for perceived loudness, so the character you add is character — not the louder-is-better illusion. Three modes, Soft, Medium and Hard, scale the treatment from gentle density on a loop to outright grit on an 808 or a percussion stack.

Sub and Air: Weight Below, Presence Above

The Sub module detects kick drum activity and generates a layered low-frequency tone underneath it, with the pitch of that tone under your control. Weak sampled kicks gain fundamental weight, electronic drums go deeper, and because the pitch is adjustable, the reinforcement can be tuned to the key of the track instead of fighting it. Air works the other end of the spectrum, enhancing high frequencies for brightness and presence without excessive harshness, in Vintage and Clean modes — presence for snares, lift for hi-hats and percussion, air across a full drum loop.

Clip: Loudness With Intent

The final stage is a clipper with adjustable hard and soft clipping. Hard clipping brings the aggression modern drums are expected to have; soft clipping keeps things rounder when the track calls for polish instead of violence. Either way, the loudness is achieved inside the same window as everything else, which keeps the whole chain coherent — the punch you shaped at stage one is still the punch that arrives at the output.

Presets, Speed and Compatibility

Factory presets created by DECAP give starting points across common drum jobs, and the interface is designed to be fast for beginners while staying deep enough for experienced producers. The plugin is lightweight enough to run across multiple tracks, and it speaks VST3, AU and AAX on macOS 11 or later and Windows 8.1, 10 or 11, Apple Silicon included, with 8 GB of RAM as the listed minimum. One window per drum, five decisions, done.

Lightweight by Design

Drum processing only helps if you can afford to use it everywhere, and KNOCK is built to be run across multiple tracks rather than reserved for one hero bus. The system requirements reflect that intent: macOS 11 or later, or Windows 8.1, 10 or 11; an Intel Core i5, i7, i9 or Xeon, or Apple Silicon on the Mac side, and an Intel Gen 5 or newer or AMD quad-core on Windows; 8 GB of RAM minimum with 16 GB recommended; and only 500 MB of storage. VST2 is not supported, so hosts need VST3, AU or AAX. In exchange for those modest demands you get a five-stage chain that would otherwise mean five separate installs, five interfaces and five separate decisions every time a kick disappoints.

The Deal

At $39.99 instead of $149, KNOCK is 73% off — and it undercuts buying its five stages as separate specialist plugins by an even wider margin. If your drums sound polite next to your reference tracks, polite is a solvable problem. This is the impolite fix, priced like a single utility.
